The contract applies to the development and delivery of five Remotely Operated Control Systems (ROCS) for use on the Norwegian continental shelf.

– This is a significant contract that marks another chapter for remote control systems. Aker BP has been a strong supporter of this technology from the beginning. They helped finance the development of our first generation system and they were the first operator to adopt the popular second generation ROCS system, which we will further improve as part of this new agreement, says Jan-Fredrik Carlsen, CEO of Optime Subsea .

Saves time and money

Optime Subsea’s second-generation ROCS system has gradually set a new industry standard for the completion of subsea wells.

Among other things, because the system has removed the need to pull a cable, a so-called umbilical cord, from the drilling rig down to the seabed to complete the completion of a seabed well.

This has also removed the need for heavy hydraulic equipment up on the platform

By cutting out such expensive and heavy equipment, the operator companies’ investment needs are reduced considerably. Lighter equipment and faster well completion also mean shorter mobilization time and fewer rig days, which means significantly lower operating costs.

Less equipment sent offshore also means a reduced environmental footprint and less deck space required offshore. ROCS also provides HSE gains as fewer people need to stay in the “red zone” on the rig.

– Digitization and simplification of subsea operations is an essential part of Aker BP’s strategy to cut time and costs in offshore operations, reduce emissions, and reduce HSE risks through fewer people on the drilling deck. We have already achieved significant savings through the current ROCS systems we have in operation, and we aim to unleash an even greater potential with the five new systems which will play important roles in the ambitious field development program we have on the NCS, says Mads Rødsjø, director of drilling and well operations, Aker BP.

Close cooperation is important

Aker BP has awarded a contract to Optime Subsea for the rental and maintenance of five new ROCS systems. The contract is valid for three years plus two one-year options (3+1+1).

– Close cooperation between operating companies and suppliers is the key to achieving major cost and environmental gains from offshore operations. Although ROCS is the “child” of Optime Subsea, the rapidly growing use of this cost-effective technology would not have been possible without Aker BP. We look forward to collaborating once again with Aker BP to achieve even greater cost savings, says Trond Løkka, innovation director at Optime Subsea.

Optime Subsea will manufacture the five ROCS systems at the company’s head office in Notodden.
