In an analysis by the US agency for road safety, NHTSA, Tesla’s autopilot system has a “critical security hole”. That’s what CNBC writes.

The security hole is said to have led to at least 467 collisions, 13 of which ended in death, while “many others” resulted in serious injuries.

The analysis is based on 956 accidents where the electric car manufacturer’s autopilot system must have been in use.

The analysis has taken almost three years, and was published on Friday.

Tesla’s Autopilot design has “led to predictable misuse and avoidable accidents,” says the report, reported by CNBC. According to NHTSA, the system did not ensure sufficient attention from the driver.

NHTSA also says it is reopening a new investigation into the effectiveness of a software update Tesla previously issued as part of a recall in December.

The voluntary recall via an over-the-air software update covered two million cars in the US and was supposed to improve driver monitoring systems in Teslas equipped with Autopilot. The reason for the recall was that the auto-steering functions in the cars were not good enough to prevent misuse.

NHTSA suggests in the report presented on Friday that the software update was probably insufficient, since accidents related to Autopilot are still being reported, writes CNBC.

Don’t doubt the technology

Tesla has long boasted of its autonomous control systems. In recent years, however, American authorities have cast doubt on whether the systems are safe.

In 2021, the road authorities began to require the reporting of traffic accidents involving automatic control systems.

In 2022, Reuters reported that Tesla was being investigated for misleading advertising of the technology.

The company itself https://twitter.com/Tesla/status/1734374558105293081?s=20 that the technology saves lives and prevents injuries, and that they are therefore “morally obliged” to continue rolling out the technology.

Tesla and CEO Elon Musk signaled this week that they are betting the company’s future on autonomous driving.

– If someone believes that Tesla is not going to solve self-driving images, then I believe that they should not be investors in the company, Musk said during an investor call following the presentation of the company’s quarterly figures on Tuesday.
