– We are open as usual until Friday. On Saturday, i.e. Whitsunday, we close at 3 p.m. Monday, the second day of Whitsunday, we are completely closed, says store manager at Vinmonopolet Amfi Moss, Anette Reite-Bühler.

The first day of Pentecost is on a Sunday, and Vinmonopolet is closed as usual.

– It is wise to put the action as early as possible. Already Thursday and Friday might be a good idea. Around 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. it tends to be quieter here, says the store manager.

She says that people are usually good at shopping in advance, but that there are many customers who come on Saturdays.

– A lot depends on the weather too, she says.

Whitsun 2017 was the first year Vinmonopolet is open on Whitsun. In previous years it was closed. As of December 2016, the liquor store has been open on both New Year’s Eve, Easter Eve and Whitsunday, according to Time and Date.

Closes earlier on Saturday and is completely closed on Monday

The shops are required to close earlier on Whitsunday and most of the shops are completely closed on the second Whitsunday. Restaurants and nightclubs, cinemas and theaters are usually open on Whitsunday.

– On Pentecost evening we are open until 4pm, the same as the centre, says Malin Iversen, who is the store manager at Meny Amfi Moss.

Beer sales also close at 16:00 on this day. Beer sales are closed on the first and second days of Pentecost.

What exactly is Pentecost?

Pentecost is the church’s birthday.
This is the festival that marks the Holy Spirit being sent to the disciples.
Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter and ten days after Ascension Day.
The word “Pentecost” itself comes from the Greek word “pentekoste”, which means the fiftieth.
Originally, Pentecost was a Jewish festival that marked the end of the Passover, and that Moses received the Ten Commandments on Sinai.
