QUARTERLY STATEMENTS: The publisher’s association has published the current metals for the first quarter of this year. The publishing income for general books is thereby increased by a further NOK 22 million compared to the same quarter last year.

Strong growth

Compared to last year, this gives an increase in publishing income from general books (excluding teaching aids) of a whopping 9.1 per cent in the first quarter.

The member publishers in the Publishers Association’s income from the general market thus amounted in the first quarter to NOK 335 million, compared to NOK 307 million the previous year.

Digital revenues now account for as much as 36 per cent of publishing revenues (31 per cent in 2023).

Income from streaming doubles paperbacks

Streaming income to publishers increased from 78 million last year to 99.4 million in the first quarter of this year.

In comparison, the income in the first quarter of the year from paperbacks was half of the streaming income (NOK 49.9 million). We don’t have to go back any further than 2020 to find figures where the publishers’ paperback revenues amounted to more than streaming revenues.

Inflation

If we only look at the number of hardcover books sold, the quarterly report shows a decrease of 6.4 per cent. Publishing revenues are nevertheless 1.7 per cent higher than last year, which indicates a price increase from publishers to bookshops of just over 8 per cent.
