Spaciousness on different levels

Trædal Thorsen was initially surprised to be asked to talk about Rickhard. In 2015, he was involved in handing out the cultural award Jahreprisen to Rickhard.

It was the first time he really looked closely at his pictures.

– The prerequisite was to be able to talk about the art exactly as I wanted, and to react directly to the images.

“Between” he called his lecture. The title is taken from the name of the exhibition, “Between construction and collapse”. However, Trædal Thorsen has chosen a more specific architectural approach. He sees a kind of strange architectural approach in Rickhard’s art.

– His pictures are in many ways like architectural drawings, and relate to the space on different levels, both the exhibition space and the flats. His production methods are very close to architecture, with both section and facade, and partly also plan. There are very simple, perspective action patterns.

It’s about spatiality on several levels, explains Trædal Thorsen.

– Rickhard always took into account the room in which the art was exhibited, and the paintings become objects in the room and they gestalt the room. At the same time, the paintings are stories on the surface.
