Young opinions: That’s why I’m boycotting Eurovision

I myself have decorated myself in glitter, played Eurovision bingo and taken a shot every time someone uses a wind machine on stage.

However, with some ironic distance – I have experienced both community and a good atmosphere in front of the TV when it’s time for Eurovision.

This year my TV will be off. I hope yours will too.

I think a lot of people think that what is happening in Palestine is horrible. We have seen images of hospitals bombed to pieces, children suffering and UN reports have concluded that Israel is violating international law in Gaza.

As most people know, Israel participates as usual in the world’s biggest music competition. This year has been more controversial than ever, due to Israel’s attacks in Gaza.

There was fuel on the fire that Palestinian flags this year are banned in the competition.

Eurovision 2024

  • This week it’s Eurovision in Malmö, Sweden.
  • The semi-finals have been played in two rounds, on Tuesday and Thursday this week. 37 countries have become 26.
  • The final itself is now on Saturday, where one country emerges victorious from the competition.

An argument often used by those of us who have wanted Israel out of the competition is that Russia was banned. That Israel does not also become so is seen as a double standard.

Despite debates and persistent efforts by activists, Israel is still in the competition. Therefore, we need even more people to now take a clear stand on this matter.

But can you not think that what is happening in Gaza is very bad, and still enjoy watching Eurovision on TV?

I mean you can’t.

For Israel, it is an advantage to build a strong “Western identity”, in order to gain support and be welcomed in the European community.

Israel’s participation in Eurovision reinforces this perception.

We as viewers must remember that this is something we ourselves accept if we choose to follow Eurovision.

Contributing to the viewing figures at Eurovision is not “neutral” or harmless.

You accept a community where Israel can do unspeakably horrible things to civilians and still be invited in to dance, celebrate, sing and party.

Culture and music shape identity, and I believe that accepting a collective identity in which Israel is included is dangerous. That in itself is a political position.

Viewers and consumers have power. I hope that many people want to use this power they have by turning off the TV on Saturday.

It will not stop the competition, and members of many other countries will probably be watching. Nevertheless, I believe that it sends out an important signal if Norway gets historically low viewing figures because people collectively refuse to accept a common identity where brutal acts of war are accepted.

If you were really looking forward to a theme party this week, there are many other themes than “Eurovision” to choose from. I’m going to a 90s party myself.

If you have been really looking forward to filling the whole day with fellowship, there are many nice Palestine events. I myself want to bring “Visit Vestbredden” to Oslo. I can promise that community feels better if you are on the right side of history.
