On Thursday, the Russians mark the so-called “Victory Day” after the Second World War.
On that occasion, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave a speech in Red Square in Moscow.
– Russia is living in a difficult period. The future of the fatherland depends on us, says Putin, according to the Reuters news agency.
Since 2014, Russia has been involved in warfare against Ukraine, and invaded the country in full in February 2024. Western intelligence estimates that several hundred thousand Russian soldiers have been killed in the so far unsuccessful attempt to take control of the neighboring country.
Western countries, mainly from the NATO defense alliance, have largely supported Ukraine with weapons and military material.
Putin said he will do everything to avoid “global confrontation”, but points out that Russia’s nuclear forces are always on combat alert.
Victory Day to mark the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. The day is the country’s biggest non-religious public holiday.
