Far-right Republican Greene has little support within his own party, and prominent Democrats had previously said they would protect Republican Johnson to avoid a repeat of the chaos following Kevin McCarthy’s departure in October.

Representatives from both parties joined together and voted 359 to 43 to retain Johnson.

On Wednesday, Greene stood side by side with party colleague Thomas Massie and directed criticism at Johnson for a series of compromises with the Democrats, who have a majority in the Senate.

Greene referred to explanations of the compromises that this is how one must govern when the parties share power as “pathetic, weak and unacceptable”.

– Even with our razor-thin Republican majority, we could at least have secured the border, Greene said.

Her proposal to call on Johnson to resign received support from only two other Republican representatives: Massie and Paul Gosar.

Johnson has infuriated many of his most extreme party colleagues by making cross-party compromises to avoid government shutdowns and to give support to Ukraine without directly linking this to strict security measures along the border with Mexico, which Democrats oppose.

The Republicans have a majority of 217 to 213 in the House of Representatives.
