Weightlifter Oleksandr Pyeljeshenko (31) is the first Olympic athlete to die in connection with the war between Russia and Ukraine. That is written by the English The Guardian.
Peljeshenko, who finished fourth at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, was defending Ukraine when he was killed on Sunday. He died in battle, writes the Olympic Committee of Ukraine on the app Telegram.
The National Weightlifting Federation of Ukraine has also confirmed the news on Instagram, offering condolences to the deceased’s family:
The 31-year-old has also reached the top of the EC twice. He had not competed since 2018, after testing positive for a banned substance back in 2018.
According to a statement from another Ukrainian Olympic athlete, around 450 Ukrainians who have played sports at a professional level are said to have been killed in the war.
