The three foreign ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia warn in an interview with the Financial Times about Russia’s interference with GPS signals.

The foreign ministers fear that the jamming could lead to plane accidents in the Baltic Sea region.

Jamming is the deliberate sending out of radio noise signals to disrupt, block or prevent the reception of signals from another station, and to influence, writes Store Norske Leksikon.

– The situation in the Baltic region near the Russian borders has now become too dangerous to ignore, says Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis to the Financial Times.

On Monday, the Finnish airline Finnair announced that it is suspending its flights to Tartu in Estonia for a month due to GPS interference.

– Finnair is suspending its flights to Tartu in Estonia from 29 April to 31 May, so that a temporary approach solution that does not depend on GPS can be installed at the airport in Tartu, said the message from Finnair.

Must have blocked signals with minister on board

In March, Russia allegedly blocked satellite signals from a plane that British Defense Minister Grant Shapps used after a visit to Poland, writes NTB.

According to journalists on board, the GPS signal was disrupted for around 30 minutes while the plane was near the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad in the Baltic Sea. Mobile phones on board could not connect to the internet, and the plane had to use alternative methods to determine its own position.
