Sources for VG: Gjert Ingebrigtsen indicted

--

VG will be informed of this on Monday morning.

The incident that forms the basis of the indictment will not concern one of the three known running brothers, but a younger family member.

The police in Stavanger are expected to confirm VG’s information later today, Monday.

According to VG’s understanding, five matters must be dismissed in relation to the position of the evidence, while one matter is considered obsolete.

The news comes half a year after Jakob, Filip and Henrik Ingebrigtsen wrote a column entitled “Here is our history” in VG.

There, the three athletics stars told of an upbringing characterized by physical and psychological violence, as well as yelling and controlling behavior from their own father.

“We have known the fear of growing up with a father who is aggressive, controlling and violent. When we were smaller, we were a big group of siblings who were in this together. Now the situation is unbearable”, wrote the three Ingebrigtsen children.

Gjert Ingebrigtsen replied at the time through his lawyer, John Christian Elden:

«The statements they make are baseless. I have never used violence against my children. That I have had weaknesses as a father, and have been too much of a coach, is a realization I have also come to – albeit far too late.”

According to VG’s understanding, the police contacted the siblings in the Ingebrigtsen family just days after the chronicle was published. All must have been in for questioning and explained themselves about the case.

The family of nine took Norway by storm when the reality series “Team Ingebrigtsen” appeared on NRK in 2016. The series was a huge success over five seasons and got up to one million Norwegians to sit down in front of the TV every week.

Gjert Ingebrigtsen wrote books such as “The art of fostering a world champion” and “Gjert’s method”. The 58-year-old was also named “Coach of the Year” at the Sports Gala in 2019.

But early in 2022 the idyll burst:

The brothers broke up with their own coach. Rumors of a violent family conflict began to swirl. It was confirmed when the three athletic children published their chronicle in VG.

At the same time, Gjert Ingebrigtsen has continued to train Narve Gilje Nordås, who has developed into one of Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s fiercest competitors on the athletics track.

Nevertheless, the Norwegian Athletics Federation already decided in October last year that Gjert Ingebrigtsen will not be accredited as a coach for two championships this year: the Indoor WC in Glasgow in March and the EC in Rome in June.

Central to the rationale is a secure framework for the Ingebrigtsen brothers. The association believes that it is not possible with Gjert present, even if he is there to assist Nordås.

Martin Ingebrigtsen, one of the less profiled children of Gjert Ingebrigtsen, has publicly supported his father in the form of a column: He does not recognize himself in the claims that have come to light in the media, he writes.
