The Shifa hospital can no longer function in any way, says the WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the Shifa hospital in the Gaza Strip has been completely destroyed.

During the Easter weekend, Israeli forces blew up the hospital’s main buildings. The entire area that was previously used to treat patients is now completely in ruins.

The hospital is located in the north of the Gaza Strip and was the largest in the Palestinian enclave. It performed complicated operations and treatments for Gaza’s residents.

“Destroying the Shifa hospital is like tearing the heart out of Gaza’s health care system,” said WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris in a statement on Tuesday.

– It was the place where people went to get the kind of treatment that a good healthcare system provides, which all of us in our communities expect to get if we need it, she adds.

Senior doctor Geir Stray Andreassen, who is a project adviser in the aid organization NORWAC, told VG on Monday that the hospital can be compared to Ullevål.

– It was Gaza’s Ullevål, a well-functioning trauma hospital with all specialities. Now it’s completely ruined, said Andreassen.

The Israeli military (IDF) confirmed on Monday that it had withdrawn from the Shifa hospital, two weeks after the storming.

They claim to have killed several hundred militant Palestinians and seized weapons and documents.

According to Palestinian health authorities, “dozens of corpses, several of them decomposed” have been found in the hospital.
