Camp Culinary, Participants | TV3 had to take urgent action after “participant flight”: – It was a challenge

The very first week of this year’s season of “Camp kulinaris” on TV3 offered far more exits than usual.

Because while there is mostly only one participant who has to pack his things and go home each week, there were as many as three celebrities who left the recording in Portør during the first few days.

Lost three in one week

Lene Alexandra Øien (42) left the recording already in episode two, as she is an introvert and found it uncomfortable to be around so many people every day. For that reason, she chose to prioritize her own health and go home without warning.

The following morning, actress Line Verndal (52) had abruptly returned home for personal reasons, before Swedish Gunilla Persson (65) then had to see herself beaten in the season’s first chef competition.

As a result, the recording was missing two participants after just one week, which led to the production having to take urgent measures to maintain the number of participants in the program.

– I have no doubt that the participants need all the help they can get this week. That’s why I’ve made sure that two new participants are ready to come in and contribute as best they can, says star chef Kjartan Skjelde (48) in Wednesday’s programme.

– Didn’t know what I was getting myself into

It is Stein Morten Lier (56) and Samuel Massie (32) who enter as full participants this week. They both tell Nettavisen that the TV participation came on suddenly.

As they replaced two other participants, they did not have as much time to think about and prepare.

– I was asked if I wanted to join on a Wednesday, and was there by Friday. Everything went really fast, and I didn’t even know what I was doing, says Lier to Nettavisen.

– So it was a challenge, the 56-year-old adds with a laugh.

Fortunately, it wasn’t too difficult for Lier to put his everyday life on hold for a few weeks, and he was quick to accept one of the suddenly available places at “Camp kulinaris”.

– I have kind children who could look after the dog. I also run my own company, so my colleagues said it was fine.

Had little plans

Adventurer Samuel Massie, for his part, had already planned an autumn without anything in particular in the calendar.

– I was supposed to have a quiet autumn to write a book. So I had already set aside the autumn, and in that sense it went well, he says.

In recent years, Massie has withdrawn a little from the limelight, and has been busy establishing a family, among other things. Since 2019, he has become a father of four, and he therefore saw “Camp kulinaris” as a golden opportunity to get out again and try something completely new.

– I thought that now is the time, so I just jumped at the opportunity, he says.

– So this will be my first step out of covid and fatherhood, and I think that’s good. Also, maybe my children will get a master chef from a father in return, he adds.

Program editor in Viaplay, Jonas Møller, confirms to Nettavisen that they had to bring in replacements after Verndal and Øien because there were simply too few participants in the program.

– Running a restaurant according to Kjartan’s standard is resource-intensive, and the menus that are presented are made with regard to how many hands we have available, he points out.

– The joy was great when Stein Morten and Samuel could throw themselves around at very short notice and join our culinary adventure at Portør, writes the program editor in an email.
