Last Saturday, a motorbike rider died when he collided with a car in Bjørnafjorden in Midthordland. On the same day, a 16-year-old boy died in an accident with a light motorcycle in Trøgstad in Østfold.

Last year, 20 people died on motorbikes, almost 20 per cent of the total number of traffic fatalities, according to the Swedish Road Administration. 14 of these died in descents. In addition, 142 people were seriously injured, many of them with permanent disabilities.

On Wednesday, the Swedish Road Administration, ten organizations and the police met several hundred motorcycle riders at the well-known meeting place Tyrigrava just south of Oslo. The aim was to get more people involved in the campaign MC-dugnaden.

– We would very much like to have everyone involved in the MC effort so that we can reduce the number of accidents. We have nobody to lose, says Lars Inge Haslie of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, who leads the campaign.

His advice to those who get on the bike after a long winter is to be aware of their own skills. It is also important to remember that other road users are not used to seeing motorcyclists in the traffic picture.

– In addition, there are both cold tires and cold asphalt, and there is still loose sand in many places early in the season, so adjust your speed to the conditions, says Haslie.

He reminds us that the most common fatal accident is going downhill on a bend.
