Los Angeles County announces Taiwanese American Heritage Week | Taiwan News

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Los Angeles County government passed a resolution on Tuesday (May 7) declaring May 13 to 19 as Taiwanese American Heritage Week.

Jointly proposed by Los Angeles County Supervisors Hilda Solis duck Kathryn Bargerthe resolution recognizes the cultural heritage of nearly 200,000 Taiwanese residents in the county, per CNA.

Solis told CNA that not only this year but every third week of May would be designated as Taiwanese American Heritage Week. “This is the first time Los Angeles County has recognized the Taiwanese community,” she said.

“Taiwan may be a small country, but the generosity of its people is very inspiring,” Barger said. She thanked Taiwan for holding the line in public health during the COVID-19 pandemic and for donating masks.

Barger mentioned the country’s semiconductor chips, boba tea, and xiaolongbao (soup-filled dumplings) from renowned restaurant Din Tai Fung. She elicited enthusiastic responses from the council chamber when she said, “If you haven’t tried them yet, I highly recommend you do.”

Brandon Tsay (蔡班達), a community hero who confronted an assailant during last year’s shooting in Monterey Park, also appeared at the county government building. As a young Taiwanese American, he said Taiwan has a deep connection with the US in politics, culture, and cuisine, especially among young Americans who love bubble tea.

Miss Taiwanese American 2023 winner MimiQ Soong (宋依珊) commented that she is grateful to the Los Angeles County government for its praise of Taiwanese Americans. The efforts of Taiwanese Americans in all aspects have made Los Angeles a better place, she added.
