News? Maybe not, but it’s a bit of fun anyway. It is today, 6 May 2024, five years since the prelude to Liverpool – Barcelona in the second semi-final of the Champions League. The result does not need to be written down, because everyone remembers it!

A day before that match, Sergio Busquets, who later started in midfield for the Spaniards, chose to post a short post on Twitter/X. The message was very simple: “#LFCBarca, we are ready”.

Busquets may have been ready for that game under the floodlights at Anfield, but his teammates showed no signs of it. Afterwards, and to this day, many have had a bit of fun with that specific tweet, perhaps especially Liverpool’s supporters. What makes it even more special is that he has yet to publish anything else since then.

Not all footballers are equally active on social media, but Busquets had been very active before the match at Anfield, posting almost every day. A brutal defeat at Anfield can do a lot to a footballer.

The best game under Klopp?

Most supporters have their own favourites, but there is no doubt that the 4-0 win over Barcelona is at the top, if not the clear best.

The Premier League title in 2020 was probably the most important moment, but as a single game few, if any, match that May day at Anfield.

Injuries to Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino really dashed hopes before the game even started, but the former’s “Never Give Up” t-shirt was perhaps enough to give a little hope again.

1-0 with Divock Origi created total chaos at Anfield, and even though the next scores took a while, there was something very special about it. With players such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, the aforementioned Busquets and Philippe Coutinho on the pitch, it was still super reserve Xherdan Shaqiri who found substitute Gini Wijnaldum at 3-0. A few minutes earlier, 1-0 had become 2-0 by the same man.

A frantic game, which actually only lasted 90 minutes plus extra time, reached its climax with “Corner taken quickly” and Divock Origi. A Jürgen Klopp match we will look back on in many, many decades.
