– We knew we had to win today

--

After another weak first half and 1-0 to West Ham at half-time, Liverpool actually managed to turn the game around to take a 2-1 lead thanks to Andy Robertson and an own goal from the hosts, but towards the end things unraveled again for the Reds when Michail Antonio decided the result to 2-2.

– I am of course very disappointed, it was really only possible that one team could win today and it was us, with all our chances and our possession and all the good things we did, Klopp told TNT Sports after the match.

– It has been a very tough ten-day period, but I think the boys did a good job today, we just let in out of nowhere and needed a couple more chances. We got a 2-1 lead but we just couldn’t do the right thing in the crucial situations and that has often been the case in recent weeks.

When asked if the many injuries in the attack were decisive for how the season and today’s game have gone, the Liverpool managers were not in the mood to talk about it.

– I don’t have much to say about it, it is what it is, we came here together as a team, and the boys who were here fought and gave everything they had. It has definitely been a bit too hard for some people lately.

NOT CLINICAL ENOUGH: Again, Liverpool squandered the chances, and again it was decisive.

– Must stop throwing your arms in the air

Klopp was mostly satisfied with today’s performance on the pitch, but there was one thing he would like the Liverpool players to stop doing.

– I was very pleased with the reaction after the break, the early goal obviously helps, and we controlled everything in the first half too. I told the boys at half-time that the worst thing we have done so far is that when we miss the chances we throw our arms in the air instead of thinking that a chance is the closest we get to a goal, so we have to be more positive.

– In the second half we had many good opportunities, we played well, but we didn’t finish our opportunity and we just have to accept that and move on.

What naturally stole the headlines after the match was Jürgen Klopp’s argument with perhaps his biggest star player in Mohamed Salah. Klopp was unsurprisingly not too keen on talking about the situation.

– We have already talked about it in the dressing room. I am done with the case.

Salah, on the other hand, decided to throw even more firewood at the situation in his comments after the match.

– If I speak today, it will catch fire, said Salah in the press zone after the match.

STEAL THE HEADLINES: The argument between Klopp and Salah stole the headlines after the points loss in London.

Had to win here today

With today’s points loss, Liverpool will end up a full five points behind Arsenal if they do the job against city rivals Tottenham tomorrow, and Klopp was not interested in talking about what that means for Liverpool’s chances in the title race.

– I’m not really in the mood to talk about it, we had to win here today, and we knew that, but we couldn’t. Now we just have to try to get ready for the next game and try again.

Cody Gakpo was a little more positive than his boss, but agreed that it will probably be very difficult.

– We are in a difficult, difficult position. If Arsenal win, it’s five points. Manchester City also have a few games to play. It’s going to be difficult. It’s not impossible, but very, very difficult,” he told TNT Sports.
