These are the cheapest southern journeys right now.

April is the month that fails you many times. From dawning spring mood one day, to rain, sleet and snow the next. No wonder that many throw themselves over the internet’s southern catalogs in search of sun and warmth.

And you can make the big coup to the south this side of the summer holiday if you choose right. Adding the trip to the south between now and the beginning of June can be one of the smartest things you can do. And some weeks are definitely better than others.

Some people wonder if the South is a special country, or where the South is.

Among traditional southern countries, Spain, Greece and Turkey are primarily considered. But France, Italy, Croatia, Albania, Bulgaria are also referred to as the South by many.

Many of the journeys are now sold with between 50 and 60 per cent off. And certain campaigns have reduced the price by up to NOK 10,000 on a number of journeys.

Low demand – low price

– Spring is normally a period of lower demand and thus lower prices. We tend to say that low season is high season for anyone looking for a holiday at a lower price, confirms Marie-Anne Zachrisson in Ving Norge.

Take urgent action

– We will move our air traffic successively after Easter from the Canary Islands to destinations around the Mediterranean. We started Cyprus and Mallorca for Easter and now all the other summer travel destinations in Greece, Turkey, Croatia and Bulgaria will be launched during April and May, she continues.

While many trips in April are starting to close in on sales, it is still possible to snag cheap trips in May.

If you combine your trip with one or more of the “red May days”, you can still make a bargain without using up too many holiday days. The tour operators already have several campaigns underway.

Burning summer

– There are many advantages to choosing to go on holiday abroad before the summer rush. Lower prices are one reason. In addition, the nature of many of the destinations on the Mediterranean is also green and blooming in the spring. A third advantage of traveling outside the high season is that there are often fewer people and plenty of space at restaurants and beaches, continues Marie-Anne Zachrisson.

This year too, it is expected that the temperature at the southern destinations may reach a record high in July and August. The World Meteorological Organization expects the records from last summer to be broken.

In May, it is more on par with a good Norwegian summer. If you want to avoid the hottest weeks by the Mediterranean, it is a good idea to travel in the spring.

False start

– This year we opened the season to Crete in record time. The first departure already took place on 23 March – and already beckoned with 25 degrees. If I were to give a specific travel destination tip, it would therefore have to be Crete. Being able to experience the whole of Norway’s favorite island without the tourist masses is something completely unique, says Beatriz Rivera, communications manager at Apollo and continues:

– Other good destinations for an early holiday are of course the Canary Islands, the Spanish sunny coast and not least Portugal. Both Madeira and the Algarve coast are absolutely wonderful destinations this spring, especially if you are fond of nature experiences and gastronomy.

– Many people think that the destinations around the Mediterranean such as Crete, Mallorca and Rhodes are at their most beautiful in May. It is these destinations that are clearly the most popular among charter travellers, followed by Cyprus, Turkey and Zakynthos, says Anne Mørk-Løwengreen, communications manager, TUI Norway

New forms of travel

She points out that many Norwegians choose something other than just traditional charter holidays:

– When it comes to package holidays with scheduled flights, Mallorca is supremely most popular in May and June before the school holidays.

There is a clear tendency for Norwegians to appreciate the flexibility you get with scheduled flights. This means that you can choose a holiday of 8 or 10 days instead of charter trips of one or two whole weeks. At the same time, you can still stay at a concept hotel and have the security of having a travel organizer behind you.

Do not do it

Other destinations that are increasing in popularity compared to last year are Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Turkey and mainland Spain with Alicante and Benidorm.

Holidays and days off

May is often a popular period due to all the red days, which often means that you can take a week’s holiday without using up many holiday days.

This year, the figures show that it is possible to grab cheap trips both at the end of April and not least June.

– April probably lingers a bit because of the thought that this eternal winter does not seem to have an end and we are starting to get quite bored. June naturally attracts a lot because it is full summer in the destinations at the same time that the price level is lower than during the joint holiday, explains Beatriz Rivera

– The shoulder season is the time when you can get a holiday at a bargain price, and the trick is to travel when not everyone else is travelling. – The price level of travel is always controlled by demand. If you choose a slightly lesser-known destination, the price level is lower both for the journey and the stay, confirms Beatriz Rivera.
