The Russian Ministry of Defense said on Wednesday it observed a “significant increase” in recruitment since the 22 March murder attack against a concert hall near Moscow, assuring that these new recruits wanted to “avenge” the victims.

The groupe jihadiste État islamique (EI) has claimed responsibility for this attack, the plus meurtrier en Russie depuis une vingtaine d’années.

But the Russian authorities, including President Vladimir Putin, persist in tracing a link between Ukraine and the attack, even as Kiev rejects these accusations.

According to the ministry, les nouvelles recruits, lors d’entretiens, “ont indicé que leur principale motivation pour signer un contrat était le désir de venger les victims de la tragédie” du Crocus City Hall.

“In total, approximately 16,000 citizens have signed contracts to participate in the special military operation over the course of ten days,” he said in a communiqué published on Telegram, using the euphemism imposed by the Kremlin.

At the end of December, the Russian Defense Minister Sergueï Choïgou had set the objective of “increasing the number of soldiers under contract” to “745,000 people” by the end of 2024 for a total of 1.5 million soldiers.

The army assures that these new recruits will not be sent to Ukraine, but the campaign, which is organized twice a year, will arrive at the moment when the many Russians fear a new mobilization.
