The police write on their own website that there will be injuries after the incident. The police have arrested a suspected perpetrator.

At 09.35 the police confirm that there are three injured. All must be minors.

At a press conference at 12.00 Norwegian time, the police confirm that a 12-year-old child has died. Two other children are seriously injured.

As of now, it is too early to say what is behind the act, the police say.

The police are investigating the case as murder and attempted murder.

Minor arrested

The arrested person is 12 years old, and thus not criminally responsible. The person will not be judged for the act. The police report that the arrest went smoothly. The perpetrator was in possession of a firearm at the time.

The police were contacted at 08:08 Norwegian time.

Emergency services have moved out to investigate the incident. Spectators are asked to stay away from the area, and to stay indoors, according to Iltalehti.

According to MTV Uutiset, a major police operation is taking place at Viertola primary school in Vantaa. There will be many heavily armed police patrols on the scene.

Crisis team connected

The school has around 800 pupils and around 90 employees.

MTV Uutiset has received information that there are supposed to be children hiding in the school premises. This has not been confirmed by the police.

Katri Kalske, deputy head of education and training, tells Yle that the city’s crisis team will meet.

ATTENTION! In an earlier version of this case, it was stated that the person arrested was 13 years old. It has subsequently been adjusted to 12 years.
