The municipal sector faces demanding challenges in the years ahead; shortage of technological expertise, cyber security and new threats, modernization of digital services at the same time as daily operations and increased expectations from citizens.

Drammen municipality is the newest addition to Sopra Steria’s customer list in the municipal sector. The company will deliver a wide range of operational services within the IT area over the next few years to the entire municipality and its employees. This is an important milestone in Sopra Steria’s strategic approach to the municipal sector, where operational services are an important area of focus together with application modernization and consultancy.

For the good of the citizens

– We want to contribute to making Norwegian municipalities even better to live in. Our aim is to renew, simplify and improve the municipality’s services to citizens, businesses and volunteers. Development of digital services is an important step on the way to achieving that, says Lars Ødegaard, sector director for the public sector at Sopra Steria.

Through the collaboration, Drammen municipality gets to operate and manage its IT services together with Norway’s leading service provider, so that the municipality can drive service development closer to the residents.

– Employees should not be replaced by machines, but automated processes and efficient operations will give them more time for residents and users, says Ødegaard.

The deliveries involve the entire value chain from end-user support, telephony, PC and client management to infrastructure and application operation, cloud management and cyber security. The company must ensure stability, predictability and information security in the operation of the municipality’s IT systems, as well as provide sound advice on strategic technology choices.

In addition, Sopra Steria will help the municipality operationalize the “Drammen to the cloud” project, which is about transferring current IT systems to a cloud platform. It is an important step in the municipality’s long-term digitization strategy, and a measure to safeguard information security.

Fantastic development

Sopra Steria is a leading consultancy within digitalisation, innovation and sustainability. In recent years, the company has grown significantly also within standardized IT operational services, so-called Managed Services.

– I think we are now Norway’s largest IT service provider and we have very good growth in both the public and private sectors. A recent example is a local establishment within marine operational services in Bergen. Our focus on being a partner for our customers in the digital transformation means that customers can focus on their core business. We are very happy to have Drammen on the team together with other municipal customers such as Oslo municipality, Trondheim municipality and Digitale Gardermoen, says Mikkel Berg Vars, director of operations and service production at Sopra Steria.

– When Sopra Steria established itself with an office in Drammen almost three years ago, it was against the backdrop of developments in regional business and the public sector. We greatly appreciate entering into cooperation with a large and forward-leaning municipality like Drammen and look forward to sharing our knowledge in IT and digitalisation, concludes Ødegaard.
