Murdaugh, 55, is already serving a life sentence for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son Paul.

Monday’s sentence, handed down in federal court, also comes after he was sentenced to 27 years in prison last year.

It came after he had pleaded guilty to multiple charges of stealing millions of dollars from clients of his firm.

On Monday, he was then back in court for the sentencing in connection with accusations of, among other things, money laundering. The 40-year prison sentence must be served at the same time as the 27 years, the judge ruled.

In addition to the prison sentence, the former prominent lawyer must pay more than 8.7 million dollars to his victims, writes CNN.

Murdaugh comes from an influential family of lawyers in the city of Charleston, South Carolina.

His murder case received a lot of attention in the media.

Last year the trial was televised, and before it reached its conclusion both Netflix and HBO Max had released their own documentary series.

The wife and son were shot at close range by some doghouses on the family’s property.

Murdaugh denied killing his wife and son, but admitted to stealing millions of dollars from clients at his law firm to pay for his opioid addiction.

Among the prosecution’s strongest evidence was Murdaugh’s admission that he had lied about his whereabouts on the night of the murder.
