Apple has beaten Qualcomm before they even started

Apple’s latest chip, the M4, was first launched in the iPad Pro. The rumor was true, but we didn’t think the performance would be so much better.

Who saw this coming?

The boards are incredibly thin at 5.1mm for 13″ and 5.3mm for 11″ – that’s now a thing, and impressive with all the power, but there’s no guarantee of raw performance increase: sometimes everything is faster, other times The CPU much faster, or as nowadays: there have been the most and biggest GPU improvements, however well helped by a unified memory platform.

With the M4 chip, Apple reverses the trend and has managed to beat the Snapdragon X Elite just before the launch of the new Windows ARM machines. Qualcomm has boasted that their chip is faster than the M3, and it is true, but the M4 is 25 percent faster than the M3 chip in the multi-core test and 45 percent faster than the M2.

In this round, Apple is lucky in the advertising: they never launched an iPad Pro M3.

Has the “iPad Pro” left me? COMMENT

While everyone was focusing on AI performance, Apple was working on the M4

For the chip, it manages 3,810 single-core points (thanks to 4.4GHz against the Mac’s 4.05GHz) and 14,541 in the multi-core test. This is the model with 10 CPU cores and 16GB of RAM, i.e. the chip that is included in the 1TB and 2TB models. This against the X Elite, which manages 3,200 in the single-core test and 13,900 in the multi-core test. In the GPU test, i.e. Metal, the board managed 54,000 points – that’s much more than the 30,000 points the MacBook Air M3 15″ 16GB RAM achieves.

Dynamic caching optimizes the memory on the chip, which makes the iPad more power efficient and provides better graphics performance in all kinds of apps and games.

Apple

There is a performance focus with the iPad Pro, which supports ray tracing for the first time:

We actually didn’t see this coming. Although it was rumored that the M4 would be equipped first in the new iPad Pro, we did not think that Apple would be able to beat Qualcomm and at the same time set a superior personal record.

Here’s the iPad Pro M4 vs the MacBook Air 15 M3 16GB (GeekBench):

So it is much more than just the AI performance that is better.
