Felix Baldauf and Oskar Marvik won their opening matches in the Olympic qualification in wrestling, but lost clearly in the quarter-finals.

Thursday 9 May at 19:45

If their superiors had won their semi-finals, they would have received requalification on Friday for a possible Olympic ticket, but that was not the case.

Baldauf got a walkover in the 1st round in the 97-kilogram class and beat Turkish Metehan Basar in an even match in the round of 16. It ended 1-1, but the Norwegian won because he scored the last point.

In the quarter-finals, Baldauf had to see himself beaten 7-0 by Japanese Yuri Nakato.

Marvik also had a walkover in the first round. In the round of 16 final in the 130-kilogram class, he beat Hungarian Darius Attila Vitek 4-2. Marvik had to see himself beaten 5-1 by Heiki Nabi from Estonia in the quarter-finals.

Hope out

On Thursday evening, Nakato lost 2-4 to Finnish Arvi Martin Savolainen, while Nabi had to see himself beaten by Romanian Alin Ciurariu in a match that ended 1-1. Ciurariu scored the last point. Thus, hope was lost for the Norwegians.

Marvik, known as “Tåsenplogen”, was allowed to participate in the Olympic qualification even though he has a doping case hanging over him after receiving three warnings for breaching the obligation to report.

There are three Olympic tickets in each class in Istanbul. This means that victory in the semi-finals gives a place in the Paris Games. For the semi-final losers and wrestlers who were knocked out by finalists, there will be a requalification on Friday for the last Olympic ticket.

Straight out

Håvard Jørgensen lost his first match in the 67-kilogram class to Indian Ashu Ashu 5-4. Ashu lost in the next round, so Jørgensen does not get requalification.

Per Anders Kure lost 1-2 to Swiss Fabio Dietsche in the 77-kilogram class. Dietsche also disappeared from the tournament in the next match.

Exauce Mukubu lost his first match in the 87-kilogram class 0-4 to Serbian Ivan Huklek. Huklek was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
