Bayern Munich raged against the referee after the club was beaten 2-1 in Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

The background was an incident in overtime, where Bayern stopper Matthijs de Ligt put the ball in the net – after referee Szymon Marciniak had blown the whistle.

– The assistant referee apologized

The assistant referee was up early with the flag and waved for offside, which led to the referee also blowing the whistle just before de Ligt could finish the attack.

According to the rulebook, the assistant referee should have kept the flag down until the attack was over, so that the situation could be checked by VAR, should it end in scoring.

When the flag came up and the referee blew there was no way to go back and approve the score.

– This is a disaster. Toni’s (Rudigers) leg is probably further in than Mazraoui’s. It is a scandal, said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel after the match.

– The lineman said to me “I’m sorry, I made a mistake”, says de Ligt according to AP.

– Not the time for regrets

For the longest time, the refereeing team could hope that the decision they made was correct, but according to the graphic presented by the TV channel beIN-sports, it appears that the Bayern player Noussair Mazraoui was onside.

Whether the Real Madrid players stopped something as a result of the flag coming up and the referee blowing, however, is not answered.

In any case, Thomas Tuchel is aware that an apology from the refereeing team means nothing at all.

– This is a semi-final, this is not the time for regrets. Really not. It is not the time for two big mistakes and then a regret, says Tuchel about the referees.

Real Madrid will face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley on 1 June.
