At the same time, Nottingham Forest took a huge step towards a new contract by beating already lost Sheffield United 3-1 away from home. Callum Hudson-Odoi was a big hero with two goals.

Berge and his teammates in Burnley had the knife on their throats at home against Newcastle and got off to a good start. The team came up with several opportunities and screamed for a penalty when Lorenz Assignon was run down by Bruno Guimarães, but was not heard.

Instead, Newcastle took over the game and punctured it with three goals before the break.

Arijanet Muric saved Alexander Isak’s flick in the 19th minute, but Callum Wilson put in the rebound. Sean Longstaff doubled the lead in the 35th minute and Guimarães scored the penalty five minutes before the break.

Alexander Isak missed a penalty early in the 2nd half, but immediately afterwards the Swede scored his 20th goal of the season and sent Newcastle up 4-0. He was played forward by Jacob Murphy, and Berge did not succeed with the attempted tackle.

Forest turned

Dara O’Shea scored a consolation goal on the eve, but to little avail. The loss means Burnley are five points behind Nottingham Forest on the right side of the line with just two games to play.

Nottingham Forest were badly out against Sheffield United early on, but turned to victory with two goals from Hudson-Odoi.

Brereton Diaz gave Sheffield United the lead from the penalty spot after being fouled himself. The table jumbo controlled the game, but Hudson-Odoi equalized in the 27th minute when he was played forward by Danilo and screwed the ball into the far corner.

The home side had many chances, and Nottingham Forest were lucky not to be behind at half-time, but in the 51st minute the team took the lead for good when Ryan Yates finished with a half-volley from close range.

100 backwards

In the 65th minute, Hudson-Odoi sealed the result. He also made Sheffield United the first team to concede 100 goals in a season of 38 games.

Forest are five points ahead of Burnley and three ahead of Luton, who squandered their chances in the 1-1 draw against Everton on Friday. Nottingham Forest also has a significantly better goal difference than Luton, which is thus on the edge of the cliff.

Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton were promoted from the Championship last year. Now they all seem to be relegating again.
