CBS is known for taking creative steps in its football coverage, and the semi-final of the Champions League between Borussia Dortmund and PSG was no exception.
One of the channel’s regular experts, former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher, followed the match together with the Dortmund fans in the stands.
– Are you sober enough?
After the match, he was in the press zone to do interviews – according to himself, after drinking eight beers.
– Are you sober enough to do this, Jamie, presenter Kate Abdo said with a laugh, before turning to Carragher and Peter Schmeichel.
– You know what? That’s a good question. I haven’t eaten much other than a cheeseburger around half past two. That might explain why I’m snotty, because I’ve had eight beers in the yellow wall, says Carragher with a laugh.
– I’ve got a new family and new friends, says the former Liverpool player, before he pulls Jadon Sancho in front of CBS’ camera and puts his arm around the loaned Manchester United player.
Carragher praises the atmosphere in the stands and asks how Sancho feels about it.
– That’s how it is week in and out. It helps us so much, replies Sancho.
Sancho: – I don’t drink
The former Liverpool player follows up by saying that the view is not much to brag about from “the yellow wall”, but that Thierry Henry, Alessando Del Piero and Micah Richards in CBS’ studio are overwhelmed with excitement for Sancho’s performance.
– I appreciate that, but it’s not over. We still have to go to Paris and hopefully we can do the job there, but I appreciate the compliments.
In a messy interview, where Schmeicel, Carragher and Sancho keep interrupting each other, Carragher ends by asking Sancho if he wants to drink a few beers with him if they reach the Champions League final.
– I don’t drink, replies Sancho with a laugh, before the interview is rounded off.
Borussia Dortmund, with Julian Ryerson in the team, won the match 1-0 after Niclas Füllkrug scored. The second leg against PSG will be played on Tuesday.
