The Sporting Lisbon manager was long considered the favorite to replace Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool. Now, however, most indications are that it is Feyenoord coach Arne Slot who will be Liverpool’s next manager.

Ruben Amorim was still linked with the Liverpool job for a long time, so when reports came earlier this week that he had traveled to London to talk to West Ham, many were surprised.

The Portuguese is to be seen as a candidate to replace David Moyes at the London club, as he is probably done with the club in the summer.

– Obviously a mistake

According to the Portuguese CNN journalist Bruno Andrade and https://twitter.com/ZachLowy/status/1783161341697503241 Amorim used West Ham’s interest to put pressure on Liverpool.

However, it appears to have backfired as Liverpool’s manager hunt took an abrupt turn when Amorim was linked with West Ham.

Now he is laying flat anyway for choosing to travel to London to talk to West Ham. He apologizes to Sporting and the club’s supporters.

– It was obviously a mistake. The trip, the timing was all wrong. I didn’t think so at the time but it was wrong, especially when I make such high demands on my players and as I am always the first to say that individual problems cannot take over the team and I have taken players out of the team for much less, he says at a press conference before Sunday’s match against Porto, according to The Athletic, among others.

– It didn’t happen

Amorim says he has said the same to the players and support staff at Sporting.

– It was my fault, I have to accept it and live with it. I didn’t think it was that bad at the time, but when I think back on it, it’s very clear, he says.

At the same time, he adds that the club was aware that he traveled to London, and he is critical of the fact that the trip has been labeled a “secret” trip in the media.

– I “secretly” parked my car outside, “secretly” walked past 15 people, talked to people, took pictures with people and got on a plane. It is important to remove this idea that everything was done behind the club’s back, that did not happen, says Amorim.
