Now a lot is happening, and it seems quite clear that Arne Slot is Liverpool’s preferred candidate to take over from Jürgen Klopp.

David Ornstein in The Athletic reports that Liverpool have now started talks with Feyenoord about the possibility of getting the 45-year-old as their new manager.

The club has reportedly been discreet until now, and did not want any information to leak out, to show Feyenoord respect before Sunday’s cup final, where they won the final against NEC Nijmegen.

Fabrizio Romano is not someone who is on the lazy side when something happens around players or managers who are on the move. In his latest update, he writes that the parties are now discussing what the compensation amount should be, and that the talks are going well. He writes that Slot is very keen on the job, and has already spoken to the club about who he wants to bring with him in the support apparatus. Negotiations continue.

Updated: The Athletic now claim that Liverpool’s first bid should have been nine million euros (£7.7 million). It was refused. It has previously been reported that Feyenoord wants ten million to release Slot, but then the question is whether it is a sum that will be enough. In any case, the negotiations continue.

In negotiations with the club

Now Liverpool will start negotiations with Feyenoord’s general manager Dennis te Kloese about what it will take for them to let Slot go.

The protagonist himself is said to be enthusiastic about the opportunity to move to Merseyside and take over from Klopp.

Paul Joyce in The Times writes much of the same, and that Slot wants the job. He should be determined to take the next step in his career, even if the contract he signed last year does not expire until 2026.

Richard Hughes is said to have followed Feyenoord’s development in recent seasons, including signing Marcos Senesi from the club for £12m in 2022. He also signed Luis Sinisterra from Leeds last summer – another player who had impressed at Feyenoord.

According to Ornstein, it is not the case that Slot is the only candidate, but he is now the preferred candidate. He has no clause in his contract, but it has been reported in several places that Feyenoord are unlikely to stand in his way, if they receive a good compensation. There has been talk of a sum of around 8.6 million pounds (10 million euros).
