Press guard Harry Korslund Bane NOR confirms this to VG.
– So it’s a formidable cleaning job, he says.
Bane NOR first reported the derailment at 15:20.
No one was injured in the incident.
Narvik station is closed indefinitely, but the derailment will lead to extensive delays on the entire Ofot line, according to the press watch.
Smelled burnt electronics
Jørn Ove Aspenes (50) was on his way to collect his wife when he came across the overturned train at Narvik station.
– I came driving on the road that runs parallel there. I only see snow pike and I also smell a smell, a bit like burnt electronics, Aspenes, who lives in Narvik, tells VG.
The 50-year-old describes carriages that are piled up.
– This will be a big cleaning job, says Aspenes.
– Large scope
The ore was on its way to the terminal in Narvik to be loaded onto the ore ships that go in and out of Narvik harbour.
Bane NOR says it is too early to say anything about the cause of the derailment or how much the damage will cost.
– That there is a large scale, we can see that, says press officer Korsvik.
– We will routinely investigate it to find out what happened.
