– January and February are challenging, we know that winter is always tough. Now we also have a situation with the risk of real disconnection in combination with high electricity prices.

Ebba Busch said so at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon. She is Sweden’s Minister of Industry and Energy. Together with her, she brought Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Minister for Civil Defence.

She spoke about the importance of being prepared for a short or longer power outage.

– We must be prepared for the worst, but work for the best, she said.

The reason for the situation is the need for maintenance and faults at some Swedish nuclear power plants. This leads to lower power production at the same time as there is an energy crisis in Europe.

Asks the Swedes to review crisis preparedness

The Minister for Civil Defense used the time to remind the Swedes that it is wise to have a contingency stock at home.

– It is important to have a plan for how to handle yourself and the people you care about, said Bohlin.

In the event of a power cut, he asks the Swedes, among other things, to fill a bathtub or buckets of water. And disconnect electrical appliances so that the household can more easily be phased back into the mains.

The risk of the power disappearing completely is still low, but it is there, according to Bohlin.

May affect Norway

Earlier in December, the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, warned of a serious situation in Swedish power production.

He mentioned both power disconnection and rationing in southern Sweden as possible scenarios.

The newspaper Sydsvenskan has previously mentioned a report in which Svenska kraftnät, equivalent to Statnett, claims that the risk of power outages is greatest in Skåne in southern Sweden and in the Oslo area. The explanation is the way the power grid is built.

The Norwegian and Swedish power grids are closely connected. Major problems in Sweden can therefore mean increased prices and rationing for industrial companies in this country.
