On the night of Monday, Jakob Ingebrigtsen raced to WC gold in the 5,000 meters in Eugene.

It was an emotional moment for dad Gjert Ingebrigtsen. Before the season, it became clear that the running phenomenon’s father would no longer coach Jakob or any of his sons.

– Terribly difficult right now, says Gjert Ingebrigtsen to TV 2 after Jakob’s WC gold.

– Lots of emotions, but mostly proud that out of nothing I have trained my boys to medals in the WC and Olympics, he adds.

Gjert has previously opened up about the breakup with his sons to TV 2. The 56-year-old, who among other things trained Jakob to Olympic gold in Tokyo last summer, has described the situation as tough.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen says this about Gjert after the gold:

– Thanks to Gjert and the rest of the family, we have managed to stand on our own two feet. But mainly, I have a good team around me who help me and stuff like that. In the end, it is up to us how to run, says the WC winner to TV 2.

Jakob is clear that the plan has been for him to one day stand on his own two feet and achieve results.

– That has been the idea all along. If you look at a system where you are dependent on others, it is not good in the long term.

– Have you ever doubted that you will be able to do it on your own?

– No.

– Why not?

– I have faith in myself, and together we have created a plan that we believe in. It is of course possible to make improvements here and there, but we do the best we can. The most important thing is to believe in yourself.

Big brother Henrik Ingebrigtsen was proud of his little brother after the WC gold.

– It’s amazing how easy this was. He is a world champion. Crazy good. He’s just completely raw. He does not allow the others to join the race. It’s absolutely perfect. Now he has silver and gold. Jakob is the king of Eugene, says older brother Ingebrigtsen to TV 2.

– The sickest race I have ever seen! he says to NRK.
