A large mass brawl broke out between two teams at the Gothia Cup in Sweden on Friday afternoon.

It all started after a penalty shootout. That’s what Göteborgs-posten writes.

When one team started to celebrate the victory, it must have caused irritation in the opponent, and a confrontation between the teams arose. When it all calmed down, one team left the scene, but the other team chose to follow, and another brawl ensued.

Several supporters are said to have tried to go between the players, but they are also said to have been attacked, the newspaper writes.

The police are in control

Both the police and an ambulance were called to the scene, and according to the spokeswoman for Police Region Väst, Anna Göransson, the police have now got control of the riots.

– There is no ongoing disturbance now, but we are still working on the spot, she tells Expressen.

She confirms that there has been a fight.

– There was a commotion at the scene and the police were called. Several people were involved and we received information that an ambulance was also needed. But now we don’t need more ambulance help, as it is about minor injuries, she explains.

– Terrible

An eyewitness, who is connected to one of the teams, tells Göteborgsposten that several players and parents are injured and need medical attention.

– It is terrible. It’s football, it shouldn’t happen on a football pitch. You are here to have fun, not to kick people who are lying down and punch their parents, he says and continues:

– They let their coach out of the dressing room so that they could follow us. It doesn’t belong here. There are parents who cry and get kicked in the face. There is nothing they can do, says the person.

The Gothia Cup is one of the world’s biggest youth football tournaments and takes place outside Gothenburg every summer. Several Norwegian teams participate in the tournament.

The cup has its last day of play on Saturday, and the knock-out rounds will therefore take place on Friday.
