The chance of seeing the northern lights is high in several places this evening, also in southern Norway.

The best conditions to see the Northern Lights are when the sky is dark and clear, without clouds. Even if there are a lot of clouds, there may still be holes in the cloud cover that make it possible to see the northern lights:
– Eastern Norway will get less clouds near midnight, maybe it will crack open enough to see the northern lights?, they write on Friday afternoon.
The KP index means the chance of seeing the northern lights. P-index 0 means low activity, while KP-index 9 means high activity. So the higher the number, the more likely you are to see the Northern Lights.
Tips: Remember that light pollution can affect conditions. That’s why it’s a good idea to go out to areas where there are as few street lights and other light sources as possible to disturb.
Find a dark place
VG has previously spoken to the subject manager at the Norwegian Space Centre, Pål Brekke, about tips and advice:
- First and foremost, you should be alert – because the light is typically strongest between 10pm and 2am.
- If the northern lights strike and come down southern Norway, it is most important to get to a dark place. City lights and street lights can cause damage.
- Brekke suggests plains, fields or forests for the optimal Northern Lights experience. Also along the sea or down the coast can be good options, he adds.
- – So it’s important to dress well and be patient.
For those particularly interested, the expert advises that there are apps and sites that can send you push notifications when activity in the sky picks up.
