– Israel systematically attacked car after car – NRK Urix – Foreign news and documentaries

--

In an interview with the Reuters news agency, the founder of the aid organization World Central Kitchen (WCK), José Andrés, says that Israel attacked “systematically car after car.”

There were three cars in the convoy that were hit near the town of Deir al-Balah in the middle of the Gaza Strip. The cars were clearly marked with the organization’s logo on the roof and on the sides and drove in an area where there was no fighting.

In the video interview, Andrés says that the organization had clear communication with the Israeli Defense Forces who had received information about the column’s movements.

– This was not an “unfortunate incident where we ‘oops’ dropped a bomb in the wrong place”, says Andrés.

Between the first and last car, there was approx. 2.4 kilometers, according to the New York Times and several other media.

– It was a direct attack. They tried to treat some of the injured and move them into another car further ahead. But that car was also bombed, says a local eyewitness to the BBC.

The Israeli military probably used a powerful missile that is usually used against armored vehicles, writes the BBC, which has spoken to several weapons experts.

One of them, the former British officer and former weapons inspector for the UN, Chris Cobb-Smith, says that the missile was probably fired from a drone.

The aid organization was in the process of transporting 100 tons of emergency aid to starving Palestinians from a warehouse when they were fired upon. The organization has built its own jetty to bring in emergency aid.

The aid workers killed came from Poland, Great Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia. In addition, their Palestinian driver was killed.

Several ambulances with the six foreign aid workers arrived on Wednesday at the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt.

Suspected terrorist in the column

Israel yesterday acknowledged responsibility for the attack, but calls it “a serious mistake”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the attack was “unintentional”. He did not apologize for the deaths, but called it a “tragic case”.

– This is what happens in war, says Netanyahu, in a statement.

The IDF has promised to investigate the incident and that the findings will be shared publicly and with transparency.

But anonymous military sources tell the newspaper Haaretz that the aid workers were killed because the Israeli military’s ground forces “do as they please”.

The attack was launched due to suspicions that a terrorist was traveling with the column of WCK, but this person did not leave the warehouse with the cars, writes Haaretz further.

– It is frustrating. We try our best to attack terrorists accurately and use every little intelligence information. And finally, those in the field decide to launch attacks without preparation, in cases that have nothing to do with protecting our forces, says one of Haaretz’s sources.

Strong international condemnation

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, says he is upset and devastated after the Israeli attack that killed the seven aid workers.

In a powerful statement, Biden says Israel’s investigation into the attack “must be swift, accountable, and the findings must be made public.”

– Incidents like the one yesterday should not happen, says Biden.

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, says that Israel’s explanation is “inadequate and unacceptable”.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg condemns the Israeli attack that killed seven aid workers in the Gaza Strip on Monday.

Stoltenberg also refers to the situation in the Gaza Strip as a “humanitarian disaster”.

Spanish-American star chef and founder of World Central Kitchen, José Andrés, said after the attack that he was devastated and mourned the loss of the victims’ family and friends.

– This is not just an attack against WCK. This is an attack on humanitarian organizations that help in the most serious of situations, where food is used as a weapon of war. This is unforgivable, WCK CEO Erin Gore wrote in a press release.
