Erling Braut Haaland praises mum Gry Marita Braut: – A little in the shade

ISTANBUL (VG) Dad Alfie Haaland has been praised to the skies for his role in his son’s life. But after the Champions League final, Erling Braut Haaland (22) used the opportunity to brag about mum Gry Marita as well.

It was in an interview with CBS, with several great ex-players after Manchester City’s final triumph, that Haaland was asked questions by former Manchester United and Denmark goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.

He wondered how much of the credit for Haaland’s career his mother should get.

– A lot, says Haaland, who was pictured with his mother in a light blue dress down on the grass at the final stadium in Istanbul on Saturday evening.

– She was a runner. That’s where I get my speed from, he says.

Both grandmother Inger Åse Høyland Braut and mother Gry Marita Braut were both good athletes at national level.

Mamma Haaland is junior Norwegian sprint champion and also competed in heptathlon. She took her son to the athletics track when Haaland was young.

But she is not in the habit of appearing in public in connection with her son’s many achievements on the field. The Champions League final was an exception.

Haaland spoke on Saturday evening about what family means to him.

– They have played a big role. My mother is a bit in the shadows, my father is more in the limelight. They have supported me since day one. They have taken me to training, they have given me food every day. When I think back, what a stressful life they must have had, I ate so much when I was young.

– So it is clear that it is emotional. So when I’m asked what’s the first thing that comes to my mind (after the final whistle), it’s not just what I sacrificed myself, but what my parents and others have done over the last 15 years. So they meant everything in the end.

Haaland celebrated like crazy with teammates, coaches and fans. But he also took plenty of time with his closest relatives who had made the trip to Turkey.

Like the friends from Bryne, Salernitana player Erik Botheim, Bryne girl Isabel Haugseng Johansen, and close family.

Although he secured his third trophy in an adventurous season purely in terms of scoring, Haaland felt big final nerves.

And the match itself was not a great achievement by the 22-year-old.

Then Haaland made a free kick that gave Inter a last chance to equalize before the end of the game. Haaland himself thinks he made an “idiotic free kick”.

– I have never had such a stomach ache before. When I pushed him a little, I thought “why am I doing this?”. I gave them a chance.

– I thought this was a hundred kilos off my shoulders. It is the first time we have managed it in this club. We made it.
