The Maze Runner gets an unexpected reboot

--

The Maze Runner gets a reboot a decade after the premiere.

The trilogy to The Maze Runner apparently ended with Maze Runner: The Death Cure six years ago.

But it’s not over. Disney is fond of recycling IP, and now that they own the franchise, a fourth film from the dystopian sci-fi universe is being planned.

The studio reveals this during CinemaCon, without offering more details.

In the novel series by James Dashner, the fourth book is the precursor The Kill Orderwhich takes place 13 years before The Maze Runner.

According to THR, it is expected that the screenwriter will be Jack Paglen, who has several science fiction titles on his CV. Among other things Alien: Covenant and Transcendence with Johnny Depp. He is also the creator of the AMC series Roadside Picnic.

Wes Ball, who directed the first three TMR-films, this time acting as producer. Who may become the director is not yet known.

In The Maze Runner from 2014, Dylan O’Brien stars as Thomas, who after an amnesia wakes up outside with 30 other boys to let Lord of the Flies.

The group is surrounded by a huge labyrinth that they all fear. Thomas is curious and works to uncover the secrets that lurk.

The diverse cast also features Thomas Brodie-Sangster; Emmy-nominated for The Queen’s Gambit.

As well The Gentlemen– current Kaya Scodelario from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – and Will Poulter; soon is relevant in The Bear season 3.

It’s no secret that TMR-the films tried to profit from The Hunger Games– the success that ravaged the front.

The first film grossed $348.3 million in theaters. Against a budget of “only” 34 million dollars.

The two most recent sequels – Scorch Trials (2015) and Death Cure (2018) – became almost as popular. Something that probably motivates Disney after they bought the franchise’s owner Fox.

Fun fact: Dylan O’Brien was seriously injured on the set of the third film, delaying production.

Earlier this year, the trilogy came to Netflix and rocketed into the top 10.

Something that can also motivate a new film.

The upcoming prequel is also produced by Ellen Goldsmith-Vein (TMR 1-3)Lee Stollman (Life of Crime) and Marty Bowen (Safe Haven).
