Leader Lavrans Kierulf on 17 May the committee in Drammen municipality is happy that there will again be a salute from the Battery in Nedre Eiker on 17 May. An article in DT states:

«It is a nice thing to start with. There are some who have asked for it, and think it was a good thing, and that is the case in Drammen and Svelvik. Traditions are something that exist to be preserved, so taking up an old tradition that has been out for a few years is extra nice, says Kierulf.”

Now it is so there are also some who have “requested” explanations as to why it is good to bring up this old and bad tradition again. There are good reasons why this was ended 10 years ago, and it is the consideration of the animal and birdlife in the area. Someone who was involved said something like this:

– The last time questions were raised as to whether this is wise to continue in an area with so much wildlife. It is in the middle of breeding and calving season. Don’t know if the osprey still nests in the area. On a couple of occasions, the lynx has also been observed. After the salute, it was completely “quiet” in the forest, which we felt.

Wise words. Saluting in the middle of the forest in the middle of breeding and calving season is certainly not a tradition that neither animals, birds nor the rest of us need to get into the May 17 mood. There is a reason that the salute from Gjetholen Fortification has been out for a few years. Saluting was and is negative for birds and wildlife, also on 17 May.

Back in Drammen: – A special city to come to

We do not have need for saluting to get May 17 mood. Birds and animals need peace and quiet, and need us humans to show consideration during the hatching and calving season. Both at Batteriet, at Holmennokken and at Batteriøya.

We encourage the municipality to remove salutation from the program. Don’t start over with an old and bad tradition. We would rather have birds and deer in the area after 17 May.
