James Gunn films in Norway

--

Superman with David Corenswet is filmed in Svalbard after careful consideration by DC Studios boss James Gunn.

UPDATED May 6: On Tuesday night, James Gunn shared the first image of David Corenswet in the Superman suit. It is dirty – and it looks like the man of steel has had a run. Fans are quick to comment that Superman is wearing red underwear (a throwback to the classic Superman?), and that the photo also looks quite edited.

However, we are betting that Guardians of the Galaxy-filmmaker James Gunn steers this ashore.

David Corenswet is known from, among other things, Ryan Murphy’s first two Netflix series Hollywood and The Politician – as well as Ti West’s Pearl where he plays against Mia Goth.

James Gunn has started filming Superman with David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel aka Clark Kent.

When it comes to the scenes with the legendary superhero’s ice fortress Fortress of Solitude, the DC Studios boss chooses Norway as the location.

Specifically, Svalbard.

– We filmed the first scenes where Superman escapes to the ice fortress. We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places around the world. But there were many things that made us choose Svalbard over the other places, says James Gunn to Svalbardposten about the Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic.

– Firstly, there is the natural beauty. But also the fact that you’ll find a varied landscape here that you won’t find anywhere else. The nature gives a special feeling, adds the Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran.

The Fortress of Solitude, which in the Norwegian Superman comics was called Ensomhetsfestningen, is Clark Kent’s private headquarters.

Mostly it takes place in the Arctic.

“Very pleased to announce the start of filming of SUPERMAN today, February 29, which happens to be Superman’s birthday. Not planned, James Gunn wrote on IG last week.

Here comes Guardians of the Galaxy– the filmmaker also with the announcement that the film is no longer titled Superman: Legacy.

“When I finished the first draft of the script, I titled the film Superman: Legacy. When I finished the draft it was clear that the title was SUPERMAN. Coming to you July 2025.”

Henry Cavill (born 83) is thus replaced by David Corenswet (born 93).

Shortly before, Henry announced that he would reprise his role as the Man of Steel in Man of Steel 2.

But James Gunn put his foot down to get a fresh start on the DCU – with a younger Superman.
