Troms Kraft Wind is a wholly owned subsidiary of publicly owned Troms Kraft. Our mission is to ensure that there is enough renewable energy for people, society and business – primarily in Troms, but also in Northern Norway.

Troms Kraft Wind attaches great importance to the dialogue with the reindeer herding, municipality and local community when we investigate the possibilities for new power production. Developing a wind power plant has consequences for nature and the users of the area. Then, through good dialogue, we must find out whether it is possible to do this in a way that is acceptable for nature, reindeer husbandry and local communities.

Troms Power Wind in Troms

We operate in today a wind power plant at Fakken in Karlsøy municipality. We are very proud that, through an agreement with the Vannøy reindeer herding district, we are given the opportunity to further develop this area. Here we supply renewable energy to 7,500 households in our area.

Together with local communities, in recent years we have carried out feasibility studies for more wind power in Troms. About 2–3% of the land in Troms can be suitable for wind power production. It is particularly the mountains in Nord-Troms and Balsfjord that have good wind resources. For various reasons, the local politicians in the municipalities in Nord-Troms have chosen not to proceed with obtaining more knowledge in the form of impact assessments. In Balsfjord, neither we nor the municipality have concluded whether we should proceed.

Finnmark is prioritized

In August 2023 presented the government “power and industrial boost for Finnmark”. Finnmark is prioritized for new power production in Norway – both when it comes to processing and awarding licences. The Norwegian Directorate of Water Resources and Energy (NVE) invited everyone with possible wind power projects in Finnmark to send a notification by 22 April 2024. 26 wind power projects in the country’s northernmost county were registered, including Troms Kraft Vind / Green Nordic’s project “Svartnakken”.

NVE will get together with the municipalities in Finnmark prioritize which projects are taken forward through a licensing process. This decision will be taken in June 2024. The municipalities in Norway have the right of veto in deciding whether wind power plants are to be built in their own municipality. The municipal councils can stop the processes at several points during a two-year process.

Troms Kraft Wind in Finnmark

Troms Kraft Wind was invited to a collaborative project with the company Green Nordic. Together, we have prepared an integrated energy and industrial project located in Lebesby municipality in Finnmark. We want to build a wind power plant on Skjøtningberg and use part of the power for ammonia production. Ammonia is a renewable energy source, which replaces fossil energy in the maritime sector. The maritime sector accounts for 6% of Norway’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

Together with local communities and business, we can contribute to green transformation, local value creation and industrial development on the Nordkinn Peninsula. Reindrifta is a central supplier of premises in our work, and we have invited the reindeer herding district for dialogue and participation.

Finnmark and Troms are connected

The power grid in Troms and Finnmark are connected. We also belong to the same price range (NO4). This means that power production and consumption in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark (and especially north of Ofoten) is of great importance for business access to power, and the price we all have to pay for electricity. The collaboration with Nordic Green in Finnmark will be an important contribution to increased power production in both Troms and Finnmark.

The government has chosen to prioritize power development in the north – both because we are moving towards a power deficit, but also to reduce climate emissions in our part of the country. Climate emissions are felt first in the north, and we are therefore happy that we as a company can contribute to a renewable and green transformation of our part of the country.
