“The world does not want more Jews” – Dagsavisen

--

A woman in her 50s from Oslo has been sentenced to six months in prison, after making hateful messages to both Jews and close family members.

In total, the police registered 77 messages with illegal content to Det Mosaiske Trossamfund (DMT), the largest Jewish institution in Norway. The messages were sent from the beginning of November 2023 to the end of February 2024.

Some of what the woman wrote was “get out of my country you religious fanatics”, “I am anti-Semitic, “Jews are the worst people on this earth”, “the world doesn’t want more Jews”, and “I want the Jews paragraph”, according to the judgment from the Oslo district court.

The Jewish section is a reference to a religion section in the Constitution which, among other things, denied Jews access to the kingdom. The paragraph was amended in 1851.

– Dreaded going to work

In the district court, an employee of DMT explained that she had received a total of 136 e-mails from the woman, expressing hatred towards her as a Jew.

– She found it very unpleasant to receive the messages, and it also affected her sense of security. She slept badly and dreaded going to work, the judgment states.

The person has also spoken about the messages to Nettavisen, which followed the trial.

– It is very unpleasant when such messages are the first thing you open when you get to work in the morning. It expresses so much hatred towards you because you are Jewish. It does something to the feeling of security. You look over your shoulder because it was clear that the person in question knew where we were, she tells the newspaper.

In the judgement, the district court characterizes the messages as hate crimes and the behavior towards the Jewish religious community as serious.

Influenced by the war in Gaza

According to the verdict, the woman explained in court that she has nothing particularly against Jews, but that she was upset about the warfare in Gaza and wanted to vent her anger by sending the e-mails to the Jewish religious community.

– I set myself the goal of sending emails every day. It was my way of fighting, said the woman in court, according to Nettavisen.

The woman was also convicted of having sent a number of offensive e-mails to a local office belonging to the Norwegian Church. In the e-mails, she told the congregation to go to hell and get on the first flight to Gaza. She also wrote that she was going to shoot a named person to whom the woman was related.

The emails were received and read by several employees at the church office, according to the district court.

Family member threatened with death

The family member explained in court that she felt both discomfort and horror after the death threats against her. She also explained that the convicted woman had a violent temper.

The woman was also convicted of inciting two other close family members. The court recognized that the messages to the family members had a background in a conflict, without it having any significance for sentencing.

Serious threats such as those sent by the woman to her relatives shall, as a starting point, be punished with imprisonment from 15 to 30 days, the district court ruled. The content and intensity of the threats, in addition to the fact that they were sent to several close family members, meant that the court believed that they qualified overall for a prison sentence of around 60 days.

Emphasis was also placed on the fact that the woman sent messages to other people in the circle around the victims that she was going to kill a family member. In the court’s view, the purpose was to make the threats appear more serious.

May not have to spend time

The woman pleaded guilty to all charges in the Oslo district court, which gave her a reduced sentence.

In total, the woman was sentenced to half a year in prison, but four months of the sentence were suspended. This means that she will not have to serve these months, if she avoids new offenses in the next two years.

In practice, this means that the woman can avoid spending more time in prison, as the detention period lasted for two months.

She was also banned from contacting the three family members for one year. This is because the court believed it was likely that she would expose them to new criminal offenses if she was not sentenced to a contact ban.
