The navy states that they have found something similar to a pressure tank in the area of Haakonsvern in Bergen on Thursday morning.
– It was found drifting in the water, and we have connected mine divers. We have identified it as a cylinder-shaped object, possibly a pressure tank, says head of communications at the Norwegian Navy, Thomas Gjesdal.
Mine divers are on site, and are working to defuse it and ensure that the pressure is released. Gjesdal cannot yet say anything more concrete about where the object was found.
– We take control of it and handle it.
– May be an explosion hazard
It is currently unclear where the tank tightens from and what kind of equipment it belongs to.
– It most likely contains oxygen and kerosene, so there could be an explosion hazard. But we are working on getting it into the water and equalizing the pressure so that it is made harmless, says Gjesdal.
Haakonsvern is the Norwegian Navy’s main base. They currently do not know whether the idea originates from their own material.
– We have created a security zone, but it will not affect civilian activity to a large extent. There is boat traffic in the area which will probably be asked to stay away.
Gjesdal cannot yet say anything about where the safety zone is.
It was TV 2 that reported the discovery first.
