– The plan is now ready for political final processing. It will be interesting to see if some measures are scrapped and if others are added. What we do know is that many of the measures are dependent on both municipal and private “drive” and willingness to invest. If they are carried out, we think Sandefjord will be a very attractive city, says David Bakke Haugen, unit manager for overall planning and environment in Sandefjord.

Participation and treatment

Work on the municipal sub-plan for urban development in Sandefjord, the urban development plan, has been going on for a long time. There have been many events in which the residents have participated and there have been many opportunities to have their say on how our city should be developed in the years to come.

Now it is up to the politicians to have their say, and it is only the main committee for the environment and planning that gets the plan on their table. It will happen in the meeting on 8 May. Later, the plan is presented to both the chairmanship and the municipal council.

35 different measures

– There are many good urban development initiatives that have been carried out under private and municipal authority in recent years. That is very good, but we need to do more. A modern municipality is more than operation and maintenance, it is also a community developer. There are many cities that invest heavily in urban development, and those that do not risk being sold out, says Bakke Haugen.

The urban development plan that is now being presented also includes an action programme. It lists 35 possible measures. There are both large and small measures, and some are realistic to implement in a short time, while others are more long-term and not necessarily so easy to put in place without major costs. Bakke Haugen is in any case positive about the measures listed in the plan.

– The opportunities these measures provide are fantastic and they therefore deserve their place in the action programme. It is the city planners’ duty to think holistically and long-term, he says.
