– I think it is very important to preserve RadiOrakel. Here, I think the cultural council must step in and ensure that they do not have to shut down, says Sunniva Holmås, group leader for SV in Oslo City Council.

Editor for RadiOrakel, Hanne Rye Hanssen, recently told Dagsavisen that the 42-year-old radio station may have to close its doors if they do not receive increased funds from Oslo municipality.

RadiOracle on a knife’s edge

RadiOrakel then wrote the following on its own Instagram account: “This year the radio may have to close for good. We have long operated on a knife’s edge when it comes to finances, and after the phasing out of the UN grid was imposed, we have had even greater challenges. Without an increase in funds, 2024 will be RadiOrakel’s last year”

RadiOrakel saw the light of day in 1982, as “the world’s oldest female-run feminist radio channel”, according to themselves. The channel has been a springboard for many strong cultural and media voices for a long time.

RadiOrakel has so far collected just under NOK 48,000 at Spleis to stay alive. They applied for 960,000 operating subsidies for 2025, and received 214,000 in 2024. They are warning of possible closure if they do not find a solution.

Points to the city council declaration

Holmås reminds that the deadline for applying for media support for 2024 expired two weeks ago.

– 3.5 million have been set aside for distribution, which means that there should be room here to ensure that the world’s oldest women’s radio station can continue to exist, she says.

In addition, she believes that the city council must provide increased operating support for 2025.

– In the city council’s declaration, they state that support for cultural actors must be increased, and if they stand by that promise, there is room to give RadiOrakel and other important cultural actors more support in challenging times, says Holmås.

Dagsavisen has tried to get cultural councilor Anita Leirvik North to speak, without success.
