A man in his 20s has been sentenced in the Oslo District Court to three years in prison for raping his own sister.
– The sentence has been accepted, and he is incredibly sorry for the whole situation, says defender Johannes Wegner Mæland to Nettavisen.
The abuse happened several years ago, but the sister did not report the relationship until last year, because the woman found it difficult to report her own brother for rape.

The brother admitted the rape in police questioning, and also admitted that it had happened during the trial.
The incident took place in the sister’s apartment after she had invited her brother to Oslo. They had been out on the town together and slept in the same bed in her flat after the city trip where they had both drunk alcohol.

In the middle of the night, the sister woke up to find that she was raped by the little brother. She pushed her brother away and went straight into the shower. When she came out, the little brother was on his way out the door. They haven’t seen each other since. It’s been over four years.
Brother and sister have given similar explanations about the incident to the police and court. Based on the verdict, the incident has not only destroyed the relationship between brother and sister, but also affected the children’s relationship with their parents and the rest of the family.
– In this case, it means that the abuser is the victim’s own brother, a serious breach of trust for her. It has also clearly been an additional burden for the victim afterwards. She herself has expressed that she wishes the abuser was someone else, the Oslo District Court writes in the judgement.
The woman is struggling mentally after the incident. Defense attorney Wegner Mæland tells Nettavisen that his client is also strongly affected by the incident.
In addition to the prison sentence, the brother has been sentenced to pay his sister NOK 260,000 in compensation.
