Education councilor Julie Remen Midtgarden is now asking the Swedish Education Agency to review the so-called resource distribution model which determines the distribution of funds to primary schools in Oslo.
– Several schools in Oslo spend a lot of resources on special education, adapted education and issues related to the school environment. At the same time, many feel that they are not compensated well enough for this in the current funding model, says city councilor for education, Julie Remen Midtgarden
The current funding model is based on analyzes carried out in 2017. The city council believes this is ripe for a new review, the municipality writes in a press release.
– In recent years, we have heard about schools that are struggling to get their budgets up, schools that cannot afford to hire new teachers, students that have not received the follow-up they need and schools that cannot afford new teaching aids. We want to do something about this, says Midtgarden.
The Norwegian Board of Education says it will consider various solutions to ensure that the schools receive enough funds and asks the Swedish Education Agency to:
– We see that measures should be taken so that the distribution of resources better reflects the needs that the schools have, says Midtgarden
The education agency must submit its report to the city council department by 1 January 2025.
