A principal at a school in the east of Oslo was subjected to a violent attack on Tuesday afternoon.

– The police came to the scene and the incident has been reported to the police. He was not attacked at school, or by a student at his own school, says division director Petter Hagen to Aftenposten in an email.

The principal was sent to hospital and is now on sick leave.

– We follow up the headmaster and the school closely, and pupils and parents have been informed about the incident. Our priority now is to look after the principal and the school, says Hagen.

Aftenposten has been in contact with the rector in question, who does not wish to comment.

The police confirm the violent incident

The police are said to have been notified of the incident at around 4.30pm on Tuesday. Police prosecutor Ingrid Hærem confirms that they are investigating the incident.

– It involves an adult person associated with a school in the area, and a minor boy who is associated with another school, she tells Aftenposten.

The police do not want to say anything more now, for the sake of the investigation and those involved.

– We have a good dialogue with the relevant schools, and take the incident seriously, adds Hærem.

School violence

Aftenposten has previously documented that in the years 2017–2022, Oslo School registered over 23,000 reports of violence and threats against staff. In those years, an average of over 20 incidents of violence and threats were reported in the Oslo school every day.

177 of the incidents were considered so serious that they were reported to the police.

Our surveys also showed large differences between the schools. The findings also indicate that there is under-reporting of such incidents at some schools.
