Plastic pollution is one of the fastest growing environmental problems in the world. Now the government is expanding support to prevent further littering by NOK 1 billion.
– We are continuing our efforts to overcome plastic pollution in developing countries with up to one billion kroner over four years, says Development Minister Anne Beathe Tvinnereim (Sp) in a press release.
Every year, 110 million tonnes of plastic waste is irresponsibly handled in the world. It is harmful to both wildlife, ecosystems and resources in the world’s oceans.
– If nothing is done now, plastic pollution will double in the next 20 years, says Tvinnereim.
The new support is a continuation of the aid program against plastic pollution, which was established in 2019. Norway is one of the biggest donors in the programme.
Norway also participates and leads a so-called high-ambition coalition, which works for an international agreement against plastic pollution. The Minister of Development attended meetings in Ottawa at the weekend, ahead of the negotiation round itself.
