The accident is said to have happened inside the cave, which is popular with cave divers.

– We have all rescue resources on site. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is in progress on a person who is unconscious. He was 20–30 meters into the cave when the accident happened, and was pulled out by the diving team, says operations manager Kai Eriksen in the Nordland police district to NTB.

The police were notified of the diving accident at 15:59. The police do not yet know whether the accident happened in connection with work or leisure.

– It is too early to say anything about age or nationality, but we are talking about a man, says Eriksen.

– We are conducting an investigation at the scene, but now it is about saving lives and transporting the person concerned to hospital, he says.

The man must have been at the caves together with a group of several people. Air ambulance is on site.

The Plura cave is a cave system formed by the 3.8 kilometer underground course of the river Plura. There have been several fatal diving accidents in the cave in the past. At the latest in 2015, two divers died, while a further three were sent to hospital, after an accident in the water-filled cave.
