Despite being on trial and being fined by a judge for violating a gag order against him, there’s little that could change what Donald Trump’s supporters think about him, a US political analyst has said.

Speaking to Sky’s News Hour with Mark Austin, Amy Walter said the former president has an “advantage” in that people “feel better” now about his policies during his time in the White House.

“They think that the economy was better than the way it is now. They think that immigration was something that Donald Trump handled better than Joe Biden,” she said.

“On really almost every single major issue Donald Trump has an advantage as people are looking backwards.”

Ms Walter said Mr Biden could find advantages over Trump by distracting from his own policies to focus on the behavior of the former president that “people don’t like very much”.

But she added that sections of the American public are “pretty well dug in” on opinions about Trump’s culpability or “whether these trials are even fair or not”.

“Let’s call it 46 to 48% of Americans. There’s not much that could happen to change their mind about… somebody who’s being persecuted.”
